How to keep a moving box inventory you can actually search
Most moving inventories fail on day two: a spreadsheet nobody updates, or a marker word on the box that says Kitchen and nothing else. What works is a box number that appears in exactly three places: on the box, in a searchable list, and in your head when you need the charger at 11 pm.

Keep your phone open on StayTag Move next to the box. Before you tape it shut, type the five to ten things you might look for: chargers, kettle, passports folder, bedding. Skip the obvious filler. Thirty seconds per box is enough, and it is the only moment you know exactly what went in.
2. One number per box, never reused
Numbers beat names. Kitchen 3 is ambiguous when there are nine kitchen boxes; box 27 is not. The planner assigns the next number automatically and prints it large on the label, so helpers and movers can call it out without opening anything.
3. Search instead of opening boxes
On the phone you packed with, search the whole move for a word like charger or scissors and get the box number and room. Anyone else can scan a box QR to read its contents in a browser without an app. Mark boxes unpacked as you empty them so the list shrinks with you.
4. Keep a paper fallback
Print the box index once everything is packed. It is a single sheet with every number, room and contents, useful for movers, for insurance notes and for the moment your phone battery dies. The list is stored only in your browser; there is no cloud copy, so the printout is your backup.

Common questions
Is a spreadsheet not enough?
It can be, if you keep it updated and label boxes with matching numbers. The advantage here is that the label, the number and the searchable list are created in one step, and anyone can scan a box without access to your file.
Do my helpers or movers need to install anything?
No. A phone camera opens the box contents in a normal web page.
